Introducing… The Big Book of Little Levels

Dec 17th 2008 - 11:25 PM

In a constant effort to gather as much information about the Little Big Planet as we possibly can, whilst in our orbit high above its stratosphere, we have been slowly noting down some of the best community levels available. We’ve been peering down from our observatory and admiring the skillful handiwork of all the little sack people far far below.

Big Book or Little LevelsAnd there are some really quite astounding marvels of engineering taking place!
Levels like Operation Sackeater by Syroc, Super Mario Sack Bros by X-NOBODY-X and Christmas Eve SOS by Covertaction are all fine examples of the sorts of levels being hammered together by the ever growing Little Big Planet community.
...And they are just some of the levels which make up our Big Book of Little Levels. Every level added to the book can be rated and commented on by visitors to Little BIG Planetoid, and over time, low scoring levels will be filtered out to leave an A-list of the very best community levels in the game. What’s more, you can submit your own levels to the big book, using our level submission page - a great way to promote your creations amongst the community.

Head over to our Big Book of Little Levels to peruse the crème de la crème of creations.

How does it work? Tic Tac Toe

Dec 16th 2008 - 1:53 AM

Another level that baffles even the folks at Media Molecule, at least according to their most recent set of level picks, Tic TacToe…

Other great levels selected to appear on the Mm blog today include Rz22g’s incredible tank, a lander mission, and an entire working piano with an auto play function, go check them out!

‘Significant’ LBP Patch soon, Developer Level DLC and LBP Home Space in the works

Dec 10th 2008 - 7:28 AM

imageMark Valledor, Marketing Manager at SCEA has updated the SCEA PlayStation Blog with this weeks latest Q&A session.

Some of the most interesting answers come from “efong”, one of the US producers for LittleBigPlanet. He pops up in the comments to answer the following questions:

Are their plans to make new levels as DLC? link

Yup, new levels have been in the works for a while (but require a lot of testing/fixing/balancing).

Are there plans for a LBP Home Space?  (re-quoted from El Scorhcho )
Are you guys going to release new materials, objects, or other creation tools as downloadable content as well?
It’d be really awesome to be able to download new things to use while creating levels… Like more music!
link

Yup, these are all things we’re working on…

Any word on any new levels by you guys?
When are we going to get a patch that will let us create levels with others or take full use of all the things you have for the game?
Any word on more tools or any other goodies you can hint at?
link

Yup, new levels soon, so hang tight.
Sorry, can’t discuss new tools :(

I remember Alex mentioning a patch not too long ago (around a month ago). If I recall correctly, he mentioned it’s slated for December.  Any update you can share with us? At least confirm that there’s something big in the works in that regard? link

Yup, we’re working on a fairly significant patch. Hope to have an update for everyone soon. Keep checking back.

So yes. There you have it. Some tasty hints at what’s to come there. New developer level DLC, new level creation DLC, and no wonder that at some point they’ll be a ‘fairly significant’ patch to get it all in there.

Dutch site ps3clan.nl have also reported that a source close to Sony has confirmed that the LBP Home Space will launch soon soon after Home itself, saying:

In this room will enable you to promote levels and users can direct you in Home loading level to play. Furthermore, the room also with a feeling LittleBigPlanet Sackboy programs as a central figure.

That sounds great.

Questions, questions, questionsOf course, the blog post also had the regular Q&A section with all the usual ‘coming soon‘s and ‘working on it‘s, which we’ll break it down in to easy bite size chunks of heavily summarized foam:

Moderation
Changes are coming very soon.

Rankings
They hope you noticed the “Star rankings”.

Failed to load level
This happens due to lag, or a level being moderated. You knew that, right!?

Lag
They’re still working to improve things further.

Full Profiles
Solve this by deleting some of the unwanted objects. They’re looking into increasing profile space.

Sackbook.com

An impressive community fansite popped up last week and we were all impressed, but we’ve been in discussions with the site owner and requested the site be suspended. Chris, the site owner, was happy to work with us on this. Our intent is to be able to offer everyone the choice of whether their shared data is visible or not in order to protect everyone’s privacy, and while Sackbook was doing nothing wrong in the way it presented information and had no access to any personal data, we believe this additional option is important.

Interesting. And a positive spin on that. Keep it up Sony. Dont go quiet on us and lock it down forever.

Merchandise
There are major plans for Sackboy merchandise, announcements in the New Year.

Lumines coming to Ritorubiggupuranetto?

Dec 5th 2008 - 3:13 PM

Well, not quite. The developers of music puzzle game Lumines, Q Entertainment, are developing a special version of the game, themed with Little Big Planet.

image

Lumines was first released on PSP in Japan back in 2005 and quickly made its way around the world and on to other formats including PC and mobile phones. It’s a trippy mash up of Tetris style block shifting and point chaining - and it’s damn good fun.

It was Japanese site Dengeki that first reported the news that Lumines will be getting a Little Big Planet makeover, and a Google Translation of the press release gives us the following Engrish:

KYUENTATEINMENTO, will be distributed this winter for PS3 to download the software for Lumines, Super Nova, SCE, the PS3 and collaboration software to the RITORUBIGGUPURANETTO said.

『ルミネス スーパーノヴァ』は、パズルゲームと音楽を融合させたエンタテインメントソフトのシリーズ最新作。 The Super Nova’s Lumines, a puzzle game that blends music and ENTATEINMENTOSOFUTO latest film series. 今回のコラボーレーションで、作中にに『リトルビッグプラネット』をモチーフとしたスキンが登場する。 The KORABORESHON,‘’作中RITORUBIGGUPURANETTO to the skin’s appearance and motifs. スキンを手に入れるには、さまざまなモードをプレイする必要があるという。 Skin to get a variety of modes that need to play. 果たしてどこで出現するのだろうか? It will appear where?

RITORUBIGGUPURANETTO? That’s hilarious!

We think it’s great that other games developers are seeing the potential in Little Big Planet and promoting LBP like this. Can any other you think of other games that would be great to have endorsing LBP like this?

If you fancy playing it on PC, it’s not that expensive -  you can go and play it here.
Otherwise, you can wait for Lumines to arrive on PSN and play on your PlayStation 3. Nice!

Azure Palace Moderated, again

Dec 3rd 2008 - 2:26 PM

Azure Palace, one of Little Big Planets best loved community levels has been moderated. Again.

For the second time now, Azure Palace has been removed without any clue as to why. Speaking on GameFAQs, its creator says:

I finally got a reply from Sam over on the littlebigworkshop forums and I asked him if I could know exactly the reasons were for it being taken down, both the first and second time.

The response from Sam_Protagonist, Global Community Manager for Little Big Planet is as follows:

Hi David

I’d like to be able to give that information out, but at present due to the way that moderation works it is not possible to do so. We know where all the issues are with the system and it is being resolved, hopefully with more news very soon.

Sam

So. despite recent updates on the SCEA blog about the moderation system ‘evolving’, the system is still flawed by, presumably, griefers in the community and the current moderation process. This is hugely disappointing for the community.

Lets hope Azure Palace returns online for players soon, as it did the first time.

Working two cylinder engine

Nov 24th 2008 - 11:48 AM

Another clever Little Big Planet player has managed to build a two cylinder engine, using impact explosives, emitters and some cogs. Good work!

This is great news! It gives players the chance to build engines without relying on motor-bolts or rockets and potentially build an engine with more power than traditional methods…

Planetoid levels: Fly Me to the Moon

Nov 23rd 2008 - 4:26 PM

Here’s another one of our levels, this one was made in beta, and is more of a little journey than a challenging level. Still, you can find this level live right now on the LPB servers, and it has just been voted the number one favourite level of gamebattles.com, hooray!

Planetoid levels: The Biggest Jump EVAH!

Nov 22nd 2008 - 5:14 PM

This is one of the levels now available online created by the LittleBigPlanetoid team. We’ll continue to update with more over time, maybe even some later today if you’re lucky!

This one is entitled ‘The Biggest Jump EVAH!‘, a short level with a big jump, that is possible to make, as this video proves!

It’s Duck Hunting Season!

LBP Remakes: R-Type style side scrolling shooter

Nov 3rd 2008 - 3:36 AM

Wow, this is incredible! In this level LittleBigPlanet is changed into something that no longer resembles the game we’ve come to love. It’s another one of those levels that makes you rethink the tools we’ve just been (or are about to be) given, and what possibilities exist for creativity. It reminds us of this TED talk on new and interesting materials, in which the talkers explain that once you see something you didn’t know was previously possible, your world and how you perceive it, is changed.

Update: I’ve been corrected, it is Gradius not R-type, my knowledge of side-scrolling space shooters proven to be a failure once again. smile
