As the year draws to an end, it's traditionally a time to reflect on the past 12 months, and look to the future.
Here on the Planetoid, we've been thinking over all the wonderful happenings of 2008 in the glorious world of the Little Big Planet.
Of course, the most fantastical thing is the Little Big Planet itself, which has opened itself up to world. Every day, new Sackboys and Sackgirls join the huge community online: playing, creating and sharing the most brilliant of ideas. Since launch, LittleBigPlanet has continued to grow with weekly updates of download-able content (DLC) and feature updates via patches.
In the last few weeks, the floodgates have really opened with the arrival of level kits. Starting with the Festive Level Kit, and this week, the Metal Gear Solid Premium Level Kit, the game itself has been flipped over and proverbially spanked in to a completely new dimension, and we love it!
So, as our end of 2008 feature, we've compiled our Top 20 Little Big Planet Level Kit Predictions. 20 big ones. The things that we'd like to happen (but won't really happen), mixed in with the things that we think could happen and things that we really know will definitely happen.
Enjoy!
One for the ladies this one, well and those men out there who love the adventures of Carrie, Miranda, Samantha and Charlotte too! Entitled Sacks and the City, this expansion is comprised for four costumes, one for each of the girls, with all the clothing items designed by some fashion designer somewhere. Gamers can expect naughty antics as the sackgirls romp around a cityscape, and then a set of levels designed around each characters deepest sexual desires. Ooo err!
Stylin' Stephanie and Sportacus are coming to the LittleBigPlanet to get all those fat sackboys and sackgirls off the sofas and onto their feet. These levels will encourage exercise by including a whole set of new musical tracks, and stickers of 'sports candy'. They will also be filled with cleverly designed visual and audio based propaganda that made anyone who played for even a short amount of time put down the controller and go outside to play football, all the time singing a hyperactive rave song about how videogames will make you fat.
Spiderman, Spiderman, does whatever a Sackboy can in this new level pack from Marvel Comics! This set of levels, objects and stickers includes costumes for Spiderman, Venom, Doctor Octopus and the Hobgoblin. Most exciting of all though, the pack is to contain a Webslinger power-up that can propel Sackboys all over the place, swinging from building to building and defying gravity with the greatest of ease.
Sackboys are set to swim in a canister of toxic ooze and mutate, with this new level pack based around the shellshocking, pizza eating, Ninja Turtles! Turtle fans rejoice, Raphael, Leonardo, Donatello and Michelangelo costumes are included, along with their iconic weapons to wave about in the face of danger. In the UK The pack will be censored and renamed to the 'Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles pack', for no apparent reason.
A bumper costume set based around the heavy metal band Slipknot. It features an orange jumpsuit and the nine iconic original masks worn by Slipknot's members from the time of their debut album in 1999. The pack also features a new single from the band's forthcoming album, an experimental delivery of popular metal music into the a world comprised mainly of original, and light hearted compositions. Sackboys wearing the full costume will also be able to perform a new emote - throwing the horns... metaaaaaaaaaallllllll \m/ \m/
After Sony took a demographic slice of PlayStation users in early 2009, they realised that their richest customers were in their late 20s, early 30s, and looked for an iconic figure from this demographic's childhood with which they could make money through happy nostalgic memories. They decided upon 80's superhuman hero, He-Man. The most powerful man in the Universe.
The 4 costumes included are classic villain Skeletor, lovable warrior Man-At-Arms, Prince Adam, and of course our hero He-Man. Players battle their way through 5 poorly animated levels, starting at Castle Grayskull and traveling all the way across Eternia to Skeletor's evil hideaway in Snake Mountain, where the the cackling Evil Lord of Destruction is destroyed. Battlecat is included as a ride-able transport in the later levels, and
You haaaavveeeee the poooowwwwweeerrrrr!
After Paul McCartney received a PS3 for Christmas and played LittleBigPlanet, he finally allowed someone to licence the Beatles IP and create this fantastic fab four level pack. This pack includes costumes for John, Paul, George and Ringo dressed as Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Players must navigate a Yellow Submarine themed set of levels, which are abstract and trippy to say the least, with the ultimate goal being to save Pepperland from the music hating Blue Meanines. As expected, the pack also includes a set of songs to match the levels, and costs way more than usual.
Friends: The one with the Sackboys, is a pack that comes from way way off left field. Very plain costumes for each of the six main characters of the once popular sit-com are included, except Ross because no one likes that guy. Additional costumes include an 'ugly naked sackguy' costume which is comprised of nothing at all, and a re-release of the turkey head costume. Levels, like the show, are often predictable, but still enjoyable. Most of the action takes part in the 'Central Perk' level, or one of the two apartments. This add-on also comes with the ability to wear every single costume in your inventory at the same time as a homage to the episode entitled The one where no one's ready.
To mark the upcoming 10 year anniversary of cult British Sitcom, Spaced; we introduce to you the Simon Pegg Tribute Pack. This pack comes jammed with 3 costumes of Simon Pegg's most popular roles: Tim (Spaced), Shaun complete with cricket bat (Shaun of the Dead) and Nicholas Angel (Hot Fuzz).
Two bonus side-kick costumes are also included: Zombie Ed, the zombified version of Shaun's closest friend; and camo-clad Mike Watt, complete with tank vehicle (ready to invade Paris). No levels are included with this pack, although there is a wealth of zombie stickers and original comic artwork from Tim Bisley's portfolio, plus an exclusive audio object which includes Grandmaster Flash and Melle Mel's White Lines (Don't Don't Do It). How's that for a slice of fried gold?
The coolest superhero of 2008 returns again with this exclusive Marvel Comics Iron Man Level Kit! Bundled costumes include evil brutish bad guy Obadiah Stane's Iron Monger, Iron Man mk 1, Iron Man mk 2 and the shiniest of the costumes, Iron Man mk 3. Mk 2 & 3 costumes feature an exclusive built in jetpack, available for short bursts when multipliers are achieved in any level! The story levels included take you on a journey from the deserts of Afghanistan, to Tony Stark's residence and then to Stark industries' engineering plant for a final boss showdown with the giant Iron Monger. But the real power of this level kit lies in the Iron Man mk3 costume: a concealed flamethrower, capable of destroying anything that burns! Hell yeh!
After the success of the He-man and TMNT packs, Sony continue to plum the depths of the 80s, and have come back with the A-Team pack. Four incredible costumes of B.A Baracus, "Howling Mad" Murdok, Faceman, and Hannibal come to LittleBigPlanet, along with a pack of levels, the most exciting part of which is when players must use their Create pop-it abilities to convert a simple automobile into a weapon of mass destruction.
I love it when a plan comes together!
The Pokémon pack, licenced from Nintendo, contains an incredible 150 costumes, representing each of the original pocket monsters from the late 1990's. The twist of the pack is that players must catch them all which involves playing the same set of levels over and over again until the costume you want randomly appears, and using a pokéball pop-it item to snare it. Collecting all 150 costumes unlocks a 151st one - Mew.
After the success of their Street Fighter II costumes, Capcom return with a full-on Devil May Cry Level Kit. A host of levels await you in this pack, all containing puzzles and challenges against fearsome demons. A Dante costume is included with a unique morphing ability - tapping R1 and L1 simultaneously, acts as the devil trigger, making your Sackboy temporarily stronger and more powerful. The ability transforms Sackboy's regular slap to a super slap, capable of slapping enemies and objects right across the screen!
Sony jump in and milk the cow on one of the PlayStation 2's most popular duos. Both Jak and Daxter costumes are included in the Jak and Daxter Level Kit. A handful of levels are included with varying amounts of the mysterious dark eco matter, with its unique ability to control your Sackboy's emotes (turning him evil if too much dark eco is absorbed). The real gem of this level kit is a new ability setting that enhances Sackboy's jump to a double-jump, just like Jak.
The controversial Halo pack unites Xbox and PlayStation fans like nothing else can. It's a call to end the long and bloody console wars, and invites both sides to climb out of their respective trenches, hold hands, sing songs and play a game of football together in the snow. The pack contains various colours of Master Chief costume, a rideable Warthog vehicle object, and a set of 10 explosive levels that take you through the original Halo storyline. Fanboys rejoice!
It's-a-me-a-Mario! The Infamous Italian plumber comes to the LittleBigPlanet to show everyone how platforming is done! A set of colourful costumes based on Mario, Luigi, Toad and Princess Peach, and a platforming adventure in which sackboys must rescue the princess from the dastardly villain, Bowser. Special items include a power-up mushroom to super size your sackboys. Let's a go!
Dooo doooo didley dooo doo, diddley doo doo, diddley dooo! It's the big one, Star Wars, and not that useless prequel junk either, the real deal from back when George Lucas wasn't quite so utterly incompetent.
This fanboy dream pack includes costumes of Luke, Chewbacca, Han Solo, C3-PO, R2D2, Princess Leia and of course Darth Vader, and a set of levels based on their classic space adventures. Expect this pack to be remastered a few moths after release, and every few months after, to add things into it that don't need to be changed, charging you again to see them, and alienating the entire fan base.
Sackboys are called through the dark portal to Azeroth, and sent to Northrend, to join the ongoing struggle to stop the Lich King from spreading his plague across the LittleBigPlanet. Costume pieces based on iconic armour tier sets for each class in the game, and an unlockable set of Lich King armour for those Sackfolk who are unable to resist Frostmourne's call, and wish to sit on the Icy throne themselves.
Levels, made in conjunction with Blizzard, contain missions such as killing 40 snow badgers, and a final Raid encounter against Arthas himself.
This one is fairly definite to appear some time this year, with information on in being leaked at the same time as the MGS a few moths ago. What it will contain, other than a Sephiroth costume is unknown, some more costumes, presumably of Cloud and his cohorts, such as Barat, Yuffie, Aeris or Vincent are fairly likely, but we'll have to wait to see if this will be a special pack along the same lines as MGS, with new levels and items, or more like the Street Fighter package of four costumes.
Perhaps levels would be filled with materia instead of the usual prize bubbles, include some intense CGI, and levels based around a plot to destroy Jenova and save the world. Time will tell!
With February's arrival of one of the PlayStation 3's Triple-A flag-bearing titles comes this Killzone 2 Premium Level Kit. Packed full of awesome content, players can finally get their hands on the sought-after Helghast costume, first featured in a 2008 LBP trailer; Killzone 2's lead character, Sgt. Tomas "Sev" Sevchenko also has a costume. The level kit features 5 nail-biting levels that take you through the barren landscapes of Helghan. The Helghast's ability to control weather systems is beautifully recreated the new weather systems tool, which can be unlocked and used in Create mode. The weather systems tool can transform a bright sunny day to a blisteringly cold arctic tundra or from the humidity of a sticky tropical forest to a torrential autumnal downpour. If only they'd shown a video of this back at E3 2005, instead of that CGI video...
We've got a bonus entry here after a comment from Naughty Dog implied that there would be Uncharted 2 DLC. We couldn't resist it...
It's time for Sackboys and Sackgirls to put on their adventuring gear and head into the jungle, with this Uncharted: Among Thieves level kit - released alongside the full game this autumn. Packed in to it is a classic Nathan Drake costume, and also a costume for side kick hardcore journalist, Elena Fisher.
Marvel at how the shirt remains half tucked in half not tucked in at all times... just like Tim Schafer says, half-tuck is the new mullet. Unlike certain other adventurer sequels, let's hope this one won't nuke the fridge.
